Q: What is the science behind Halotherapy (Salt Therapy)?
A: Halotherapy is a therapeutic treatment for lung and skin health using controlled concentrations of dry salt aerosol. For more information, check out our Research & Media page.
Q: How does my body uptake the salt during a Salt Therapy session?
A: Negatively-charged micron-sized particles (1-10 micrometers) penetrate deep into airways and skin pores causing an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect.
Q: How does it help me breathe better?
A: Many body parts and bodily functions can improve during Halotherapy. The lungs are just one system that benefits from Salt Room sessions and our other salt-inspired facial, massage and bodywork treatments:

  • Deeper breaths | Widening airway passages and reduction in mucosal swelling results in improved overall function.
  • Clearer breaths | Due to high osmosis of salt on the airway surface, lung cilia are stimulated to help move mucus out of the lungs. This is one of the reasons we recommend Halotherapy for guests with Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma.

Q: Does it help my skin, too?
A: Breathing in salt increases skin cell function activity and activates physiologic activity that helps the skin’s protective properties. Salt microcrystals within skin increase the effectiveness of various curative and cosmetological agents. This is one of the reasons we recommend Halotherapy for guests with Atopic Dermatitis. Several of our Skin Care and Massage services employ the use of salt to boost your skin’s vitality, elasticity and radiance.
Q: Can it help reduce stress and the effects of anxiety and depression?
A: Salt aerosol is negatively charged. Dry sodium chloride aerosol has a considerable negative charge of particles ranging from 6.0 to 10 nano Coulombs per cubic meter. Negatively charged particles have anti-depressive effects according to numerous studies listed on our Research & Media page.
Q: Can it help me fight illness, infection and inflammation?
A: By removing foreign microbes from the lungs, Salt Therapy guests are able to remove the cause of their illnesses from their body in a gentle, non-invasive and inexpensive way. Our Holistic Treatment specialists focus on using salt and other methods to improve the overall well-being of your body, mind and spirit.
Q: How often should I seek treatment?
A: If you suffer from illness, infection, injury, skin conditions or mental health issues and would like to see a timetable on recommended session frequency listed by medical condition, visit our Treatment Sessions page. We have monthly and quarterly Salt Therapy passes available for adults, children and families who need to visit our communal Salt Room more frequently. And guests may also reserve private sessions.
Q: Can Halotherapy be harmful to my body?
A: The amount of sodium intake from one session ranges from 2-5 mg (0.003% of your Daily Value) and should not effect blood pressure and is not ingested. Salt Therapy is appropriate for guests ages 1 and up. Treatment should be avoided during the acute phase of any illness, including the following: infections accompanied by fever, active tuberculosis, cardiac insufficiency, COPD in stage 3 of lung insufficiency, coughing up blood, alcohol or drug intoxication, uncontrolled severe (stage IIB) hypertension, and acute stages of lung disease. We do not claim to be a replacement for any medication or medical treatment but only a complement to traditional medicine techniques.
