How Halotherapy (Salt Therapy) works

Halotherapy is a drug-free, noninvasive therapeutic treatment for respiratory and skin conditions.

Salt aerosol provides anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects on the respiratory tract while helping to thin out mucous and stimulate the body’s natural defense activity. This helps the cleansing ability of the lungs and reduces inflammation that causes wheezing, making Halotherapy treatment beneficial to anyone exposed to environmental allergens or pollutants like smog.

The salt particles also have favorable effects on the blood micro-circulation of the skin, reduces skin inflammation, and can kill bacteria and fungi present with many dermatological conditions which can relieve itching while also nourishing and moisturizing the affected areas.

Clinical studies have shown that salt therapy reduces inflammation in the respiratory tract and aids in mucous clearing, leaving you breathing easier. With regular Halotherapy sessions, people have been able to reduce their use of medications, the rate of hospital visits, and the frequency of asthma and allergy attacks.

While not a replacement for established medical treatment, Halotherapy is an effective supplemental therapy that assists in reducing the need for pharmaceuticals, as well as providing the preventive measures and rehabilitation our bodies need.

HISTORY of Halotherapy

Salt Therapy has a rich history throughout Europe, dating back to the Roman and medieval periods, as there are records of improvements in the breathing of salt miners from that time. In those days, monks took sick people to the salt caves and let them breathe the air, which was saturated with salt particles.

In 19th century Poland, the miners in the salt shafts never seemed to suffer from lung related diseases, such as pneumonia and asthma, and had decreased incidences of other illnesses compared to the general population. In 1843, a Polish physician named Dr. Felix Bochkowsky, the state authority for occupational health in Polish industry at the time, published a book about the beneficial effects that salt cave environments had on respiratory health.

This led to the use of salt mines as a therapeutic treatment, which became known as Speleotherapy and the establishment of the first salt mine treatment center in Wieliczka, Poland.

As technology developed, so did salt therapy. Halotherapy (“halos” is Greek for “salt”) is the active form of this treatment and has been used in Eastern Europe for more than 20 years.

Halotherapy blends old methods with modern technology through the use of halogenerators, which actively and precisely disperse dry salt aerosol into the salt rooms to accelerate the positive effect of this safe, natural therapy. As the evidence of its health benefits has been noted, the number of Halotherapy centers around the world has grown to now include Western Europe, Israel, Canada, and the United States.

FAQs

  • Halotherapy is a therapeutic treatment for lung and skin health using controlled concentrations of dry salt aerosol.

  • Negatively-charged micron-sized particles (1-10 micrometers) penetrate deep into airways and skin pores causing an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect.

  • Many body parts and bodily functions can improve during Halotherapy. The lungs are just one system that benefits from Salt Room sessions and our other salt-inspired treatments:

    • Deeper breaths | Widening airway passages and reduction in mucosal swelling results in improved overall function.

    • Clearer breaths | Due to high osmosis of salt on the airway surface, lung cilia are stimulated to help move mucus out of the lungs. This is one of the reasons we recommend Halotherapy for guests with Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma.

  • Salt aerosol is negatively charged. Dry sodium chloride aerosol has a considerable negative charge of particles ranging from 6.0 to 10 nano Coulombs per cubic meter. Negatively charged particles have anti-depressive effects according to numerous studies.

  • By removing foreign microbes from the lungs, Salt Therapy guests are able to remove the cause of their illnesses from their body in a gentle, non-invasive and inexpensive way. Our
